Mr. Clearwater

It’s been about 10 years since I last remember going to Dallas Mill Deli, so I definitely was excited to try it out again. The place was set up with a lot of cool pictures and memorabilia from modern-day and historic Huntsville. Since it was raining and the seating outside wasn’t an option, I ended up asking a stranger if 3 of us could sit with her… Turns out we had a bunch of mutual friends and had a great colloquy.

I’d rate my experience as a 4.5/5.

WHAT HE ATE:
Egg Salad Sandwich - $4.49
and Lobster Bisque - $3.99

For food, I went with an egg salad sandwich and a bowl of lobster bisque. The egg salad sandwich was amazing. Not too much mayo, not too much onion. MmmmmMmmmmm. 🙂 As for the lobster bisque, I think that people that like lobster bisque would be all over Dallas Mill Deli’s rendition, but I don’t think that I am one of those people. I had never had a LB before, so I didn’t know what to expect, but the flavor wasn’t for me. I give my food experience a 4/5

The Detective

It was a dreary day at the office with the rain and cold and all I could think about was LUNCH! We had decided to visit Dallas Mill Deli this Friday. I’ve never been there or even heard of this place so I was excited. But apparently all the true locals know of it and visit regularly. It was a small place with a welcoming building and pretty Christmas decorations catching your eye as you enter the rustic building. We were welcomed at the door by employees and the chatter of family and friends enjoying their lunches. The place was quite small but had a family feel to it. We ended up asking to sharing a table with an elderly woman because we couldn’t all fit at one table. She was so nice about it and seemed like a regular!

WHAT SHE ATE:
Bacon Cheeseburger - $5.99

I ordered the Bacon Cheese Burger(I wish I were better about trying new foods but I realllllllly like burgers). It was DELICIOUS! Juicy burger and fresh tomato/lettuce/onions, cheddar cheese and condiments. I couldn’t tell if I was just starving or if they put some special sauce on it that made it taste incredible! Presentation wise, it was served in wax paper like a fast food burger would be, but it was far from tasting like fast food. I was plenty satisfied by Dallas Mill Deli and will be back!

The Boss

It was raining so hard when we arrived that the parking lot was almost flooded! We ran inside and were able to order at the counter right away. The friendly lady at the counter waved us forward so she could take our order. We glanced at the menu, let her know what we wanted, and then she gave us one copy of the ticket to take to the register and handed the other ticket to the kitchen so they could prepare our order. The cashier rang up our order quickly, making the whole ordering process one of the fastest I have ever experienced! The dining room was pretty full, but customers moved through fairly quickly. Our food came out after only 5-10 minutes and was brought directly to our table.

WHAT SHE ATE:
Chicken Salad Sandwich - $5.39
w/Miss Vickie's Jalapeno Potato Chips

I ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich with some Miss Vickie’s Jalapeno Potato Chips (my favorite!) and our table sampled an order of the Strawberry Pretzel Salad. The sandwiches came out wrapped in parchment paper with the title of the sandwich written on the outside. I got the Honey Wheat bread which was probably just a basic loaf of bread you could buy at a grocery store. It worked with the sandwich, though, and the whole thing reminded me of something my grandma would make. Lots of mayonnaise, so only order it if you like that!

The Engineer

This restaurant was a very tidy and cozy place to be. I felt like it was also a very homelike atmosphere in that all of the employees were in more casual wear, and the food was all homemade as they said. I was very happy with how kind and welcoming the staff was, and also the suggestions they gave for food options were very passionate and made me very excited about the different menu items they suggested. I would suggest this place for small groups though, because the seating is very limited, especially around lunch time. We had a hard time getting seating due to the small space and limited tables. Overall it was a good experience that was clean and tidy, though a little small, and I would suggest this place to couples for a date, or maybe a place to visit with a few friends who are new to Huntsville.

WHAT HE ATE:
Egg Salad Sandwich - $4.49

The food at this restaurant was absolutely delicious. I partook of an egg-salad sandwich with bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes. It was an excellent sandwich that reminded me of picnics and times as a kid eating sandwiches outside on the porch enjoying the sun! The rustic nature of the building also added to the eating experience in that the flavor sending me back was matched by the decor. I thought the texture of the food was brilliant! It wasn’t soggy from sitting around too long, but rather was freshly made to order. The toasted bread also added to the wonderful texture to the sandwich. I also took a pinch of the dessert that we ordered, which was pretty good! It was a strawberry pretzel salad, which tasted just like strawberry shortcake, so if you’re into that, you would definitely enjoy this! Overall the food quality was very good!

Wise Pat

Starting with a snippet from John T. Edge, an American food writer. “Food… is our most frequently indulged pleasure. Food is essential to life. It’s arguably our nation’s biggest industry.” When I eat food the three most common things I think about are: how it will taste, how it will help me with the my next step of the day (working at the office, working out, going to sleep) and the nutrition it provides my body.

WHAT HE ATE:
Southern Reuben (Friend Bologna) Sandwich - $5.79

I got the Southern Reuben (Fried Bologna) – to go. A report from top to bottom. I took my first bite about 1 hour after the sandwich was made. Surprisingly not soggy, the bread was firm, even a little crunchy. I liked that! One of my favorite sandwiches is made at FireHouse Subs and if they sit for over 30 minutes the bread feel like it was totally submerged. The bologna was next, and not the bologna that your grand mom put on your sandwiches growing up. It was an extra thick piece of bologna, pan fried crispy. Sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and an unknown sauce to complete. It didn’t put me to sleep as I needed to continue working. The taste was a 3/5, so I would eat it again, but I wouldn’t go out of the way for it. The nutrition would be poor.

The Hipster

Today the crew ate at Dallas Mill Deli, a pleasant eatery off of Pratt ave. in downtown Huntsville. We pulled in around 12:17 PM into a small parking lot that was mostly filled. After parking, we walked up brick stairs into the deli diner. The diner part of the restaurant was kept up and clean for the high traffic hour. Much like Cozy Cow, though, it was a little cozy for our large group of people. The staff was quick and efficient, at getting our orders out. The dinning room is decorated with old-timey photos, licence plates, and other older decor items, making the environment seem older and yet well cherished. I ordered a traditional, and very tasty, cheeseburger.

WHAT SHE ATE:
Cheeseburger - $5.49

“Very quickly after we had ordered our food it was delivered to our table. I ordered a traditional cheeseburger. And it was mouthwateringly delicious. It was juicy and well cooked. I usually don’t go for burgers, and it was awesome to eat one and be happily surprised. The bun was perfect and honestly a bun can make or break a burger experience for me. For dessert, we all had a taste of their Strawberry Pretzel Salad, which was also very delicious.”

The Apprentice

The Deli dining room is reminiscent of a smaller, more authentic, Cracker Barrel. With local items and news peices covering the walls, it provides an interesting atmosphere to observe while eating. Staff were polite and knew what they were doing. Another small detail that I appreciated was a small chart of all the condiments and fillers that go on their burgers. Which allowed an easy way to quickly pick what you did, or didn’t want, on your burger. The only critique I would give is that there are not a lot of seats inside.

WHAT HE ATE:
Bacon Cheeseburger - $5.99

The bacon cheesburger I ordered was done to perfection, and tasted really good. The bacon, while not the premium thick quality you would buy from your local supermarket, was crunchy and tasted amazing. They offer a wide variety of chips and fountian drinks to go with your meal.
