Moe’s Bar B Que recently opened a new location in Downtown Huntsville. With their rooftop dining area, they certainly have made a unique space for themselves on the Huntsville restaurant scene. It was a little hot, but we sat out on the roof for a little while. There was a speaker on the roof so we could hear clearly when they announced that our food was ready for pickup at the counter downstairs. The speaker also played rock music, making the patio an enjoyable, fun atmosphere. There is plenty of seating in this restaurant, especially if you are open to sitting outside on one of the two upper decks or on the patio by the street on the ground level. There is also a second bar area and drink machine for refills indoors on the upper level. Very cool space!
Smoked Wings (8 wings) - $10.00
marinated, smoked, and fried. Served with a side of white sauce. Flavors: Buffalo, BBQ, Dry Rub
These wings were fantastic! A little spicy, a little crispy, and a little smoky, they hit all the best characteristics of some great wings! Juicy, with plenty of meat on the bone, they were very satisfying and it was hard to want to eat more food after we’d downed these wings as our “appetizer”.
We ordered two plates of wings so we could all split them. There were five people in our party and we only ate about half of the wings and took the other half home! Moe’s definitely doesn’t disappoint with their portion sizes!
This week the crew headed to Moe’s Original Bar B Que in downtown Huntsville. This location opened recently and is now a local favorite. It is a two story location decorated with pictures and beautiful woodworking throughout both levels. Overall it is a fun and upbeat environment with good music and is visually appealing with the retro meets sports meets artsy decor. We sat on the balcony that was accessible through the upper level and overlooked a part of downtown Huntsville. It had lights up there and was very nice in the day, but I bet would be even more fun at nighttime!
WHAT SHE ATE:
Smoked Chicken Platter w/Baked Beans and Coleslaw - $12.00
As far as the food, it was delicious! I got the Smoked Chicken Platter with a side of Cole Slaw and Baked Beans. The Smoked chicken was delicious and nice and tender, and the baked beans were amazing. I think I can call those baked beans the best I have ever had! They were not your basic baked beans, had an amazing flavor, and had other things mixed in but did not overtake the original substance of the beans. I am not sure what else they cooked with them, but I highly recommend them as a side if you go! I definitely will go again and let people know it was delicious so they can experience local BBQ joy themselves.
Fun Fact – Moe’s was founded in Vail, CO… even though its owners are from Tuscaloosa, AL. I know, I would never found a business in T-Town either… (War Eagle!)
WHAT HE ATE:
Pulled Rib Sammy Meal w/ Fried Green Tomatoes and Pulled Pork Chili - $9.00
I’ve been to Moe’s BBQ a bunch of times and have always really enjoyed their food. Today I had the Friday special, which was the rib sandwich. One of my favorite vices is the McDonald’s McRib sandwich, so Moe’s had an uphill fight to win me over for “best rib sandwich” award. The sandwich was very tender and had just the right amount of sauce, but I’ll let you try the McRib before I tell you which one was better. Overall, 5/5 for food and experience.
Today we visited the new Moe’s BBQ in downtown Huntsville. The new building is super nice, and we were able to find seating effortlessly, even though it was during peak lunch hours. We sat on the rooftop outside, which was cool, and the food came out quickly.
WHAT HE ATE:
Southern Fried Shrimp Moe Boy Meal w/Fried Green Tomatoes and Mac N' Cheese
Golden brown fried shrimp served on a toasted bun, with creamy tartar sauce, cool crisp marinated slaw, and pickles
I’m not a huge BBQ fan so I ordered the Shrimp Po Boy. I asked for it without the slaw or tartar sauce, so I was unsure of how much flavor it would have. I was actually surprised at how good the sandwich was. The shrimp appeared to be fairly fresh, if it was previously frozen I couldn’t tell, and the flavor was great. The Mac N’ Cheese wasn’t anything too special, but it was still good. The Fried Green Tomatoes had a nice flavor and were pretty large.
I loved the environment Moe’s has created with this space. They have really outdone themselves with the design and flow of the restaurant, with an order-at-the-counter start to your visit and an abundance of seating availability and options. Outdoor and indoor seating of various kinds were readily available to us, and there were tables of all different sizes to accommodate your group.
WHAT SHE ATE:
Smoked Half Chicken Platter w/Mac N' Cheese and Potato Salad - $12.00
Hot, smoked, half chicken complemented by our house made sweet and tangy BBQ sauce, creamy Alabama style white BBQ sauce, and pickles
I love barbecue. I think it’s hard to go wrong with it, but Moe’s really hits their menu out of the park. I ordered the smoked chicken platter with mac n’ cheese and potato salad. They throw in a slab of cornbread with the platter meals, making this choice hearty and VERY filling. I took half of mine home, but I also snacked on the delicious hot wings before I started eating. The only thing I didn’t LOVE was the mac n’ cheese. It wasn’t very cheesy and just wasn’t anything special. Sort of something you would find at a church potluck.
White Wolf, Guest
The newly renovated restaurant is designed very well. There’s plenty of room for waiting which was useful since it was packed for our Friday lunch. I love how much seating they have both on the bottom and top floors with the bars on both floors. The outdoor seating on the top and bottom floors shows that they put a lot of thought into what they could do with the seating. I really liked the modern rustic vibe. The top floor had a bunch of TVs and is a really cool hangout spot. The bathroom on the top floor was a really nice touch as well. There’s space for local live musical acts, and it would be nice to revisit sometime when they have live music. There were speakers throughout the building, in the bathrooms, patios, and main dining areas, through which they called out orders when they were ready. Live versions of classic rock songs reverberated through the building, adding to the party environment and keeping the experience cohesive. (You couldn’t tell where one song ended and one began because of the crowds cheering on the tracks.) This place is one of the few affordable, regular-hours-type restaurants downtown where you can get good food whenever you’re meandering without spending a fortune! The only con I can think of was the parking.
WHAT HE ATE:
Pulled Rib Sammy Meal w/ Mac N' Cheese and Banana Pudding - $9.00
Slow smoked pork shoulder, dressed in tangy sop sauce, served on a toasted bun, our house made sweet and tangy BBQ sauce and pickles
The sides were decent sizes, but the entree was really big! I love the fact that they give you two sides so you can mix and match any of the delicious sides. The sandwich itself was delicious. The bun was not your boring, standard white bun. It was more like a toasted gourmet roll (that may have been buttered). I am a (picky) meateater, so I got the sandwich plain. Just a delicious toasted bun and scrumptious meaty ribs is more than enough for a simple man like myself. There was no fat in the meat, which was awesome. The meat was fairly dry, but I like it like that, so that was perfect for me. I could tell it was cooked for a long time and had a lot of delicous smokey flavor. The mac n’ cheese was so good that you could eat a lot more of it, but it’s good for both parties that they limit that portion size! I loved that the banana pudding had pureed banana in it instead of big chunks of banana. The two vanilla wafers, one at the bottom and one at the top, were a great addition to the classic treat.
