Shaggy’s Burgers and Tacos | If you’re new around Huntsville you may not have seen Shaggy’s before. It’s a little bit off of the main busy stretch of University Drive, really close to the Super Target and on Enterprise Way. But even if you haven’t noticed it before, this place is owned by the same local restaurant group as some of the Huntsville Restaurant Greats – Rosie’s, Steak Out, Phil Sandoval’s, Little Rosies, Walton’s, and Ted’s Barbecue – so you know it’s going to be good! What we didn’t realize previously was that Shaggy’s serves breakfast starting at 6:30 AM daily (except Sunday, the only day they’re closed)!
Walking into Shaggy’s, a friendly man held the door for me, giving me a pleasant first impression of the kind of person who would want to eat there. When I approached the counter, the staff was friendly and engaged me immediately, but was respectful when I said I needed a minute to order. They were happy to assist with any questions I had and they were quick to take my order when I was ready. The tall walls and ceilings in the restaurant with vibrant, carefully planned and placed decor, as well as multiple large TV screens all the way up to the ceiling, provided me with an entertaining atmosphere while I waited for the rest of the team to join me for breakfast. The outdoor patio, I thought, would make a fun environment to come to with friends for a late night snack in the warmer months, especially since Shaggy’s is open until 9 PM during the week and all the way until 10 PM on the weekends.
WHAT SHE ATE:
Bacon, Egg, & Egg Cheese Biscuit
Bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits are my go-to for breakfast food, usually – all my favorite things in one tasty breakfast sandwich! My Shaggy’s biscuit was delicious, but it fell apart quite a lot and I found out quickly that I would need to use a fork to finish. I also ordered the cheezy browns, which is I assume are basically hashbrown casserole thrown into a skillet to get them nice and crispy. Those were delicious! My pancake was huge, but tasted pretty average. I loved that the syrup was warm – so cozy for a cold wintry morning!
I have actually never been to Shaggy’s so I was especially excited to try their food. I like the way they decorate; they had a beach meets vintage meets rainbow theme going on. Surfboards and vintage mug celebrity shots decorated the wall making for a funky and playful mood. There was also a rainbow canopy of sorts hanging from the ceiling that was a fun addition to the decor. The space was a great size and it is a clean environment.
WHAT SHE ATE:
American Breakfast - $6.99
2 eggs, choice of sausage, bacon or country ham, cheesy browns, biscuits and gravy
I got the American Breakfast with eggs over easy, sausage, bacon, and hashbrowns. The scrambled eggs have batter in them, so it is not safe for those with with celiac or gluten sensitivities. I do not think it says that anywhere but if you are new to staying away from gluten, you might find out the hard way. Luckily I knew to ask, and they easily found out the answer for me which I appreciated. Everything I ordered was good and went great with their tasty coffee. The sausage was a great size, portion, and consistency and the hashbrowns were great as well. All of my food tasted delicious and I definitely will be going back sometime for other meals.
Being as Huntsville is my city, rare a day is it that I am convinced to travel nigh the city that won’t speak it’s name (Madison). Yes, I know, to the random person, this might seem a little petty… a little immature… and I can’t disprove that with words, so you’ll just trust me about the place. Yes, I also know that Madison Square Mall never was really in Madison and that Shaggy’s is probably within the HSV city limits, but here’s my point, even though Shaggy’s is near you know who, it’s still worth the drive from South Huntsville.
WHAT HE ATE:
I eat at little Rosie’s for breakfast basically every single day they are open. Shaggy’s is basically the same great food and service with more stuff on their menu. Like Little Rosie’s, Shaggy’s decorum is cool and their service is better than Chick-fil-A (sorry Jordan, but it is). I got the breakfast quesadilla, and of course, it was dominant. I scarfed it down so fast Jordan probably didn’t even get a picture. You gotta put mushrooms, bacon, and ham in it. So, If you’re looking for a great place for a cup of Joe and some breakfast, hit up Shaggy’s. It’s kinda close to the old Discovery Zone 🙂
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not a huge breakfast fan. I probably eat breakfast 3-4 times a month. Until recently I wasn’t aware that Shaggy’s served breakfast. I love their burgers and fries, and had never had a bad experience there, so I was excited to try their breakfast. Since I do not eat breakfast often, I’m very particular about what I eat at breakfast, so keep that in mind throughout my review!
WHAT HE ATE:
Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Breakfast Quesadilla
This morning I decided to order the sausage, egg, and cheese quesadilla. It came with a side of pico de gallo and sour cream. I always enjoy having sour cream with my quesadillas – quesadillas are fairly basic dishes in general (which isn’t a bad thing) – I enjoy the added consistency and flavor. All of the contents of the quesadilla were evenly heated and the cheese was all melted, which I really appreciated. Some restaurants cook quesadillas too quickly, which results in a cooked tortilla and barely melted/heated inside. I’d definitely go back for some lunch or dinner. If I was a breakfast eater I’d go back; everything is very reasonably priced, there was quality service, and the food was pretty good!
