SURIN OF THAILAND: HUNTSVILLE | It was the first time visiting Surin of Thailand: Huntsville for about half of us. As we approached the entrance of the  building, right on the corner of a large shopping strip, we were surprised at the size of the dining room. When we went inside, we were impressed by the cleanliness, stylish decor, and the roominess of the dining area, even though there were many customers already seated.

Our Average Rating:
4.358333333/5

We were seated almost immediately in a large booth with plenty of room for the 8 of us. Our waiter was extremely polite, attentive, and friendly, but not obtrusive. The environment would be suitable to go here on a date or with a group of friends. We found the prices to be very reasonable at lunch time.

Overall, we were extremely pleased with our Surin experience and we are already looking forward to our next visit there!

Soup and Appetizer

Tofu Coconut Soup

Complimentary with Dine-In Lunches

The tofu coconut soup had a unique, delicious flavor, warm and bold, with ginger and lemon tones. About half of us didn’t care for it very much, referencing personal distaste for coconut and ginger.  The other half of the group agreed that it was a good way to start the meal – just enough soup to make you hungry and ready for the main course!

Pot Stickers with Red Curry - $7.50

Delicate vegetable and pork filled dumplings served in a Thai red curry sauce.

The pot stickers were pretty good. The curry sauce wasn’t too spicy. We asked for two orders since there were only six in an order. These pot stickers are more steamed than fried, and don’t have a crispy texture like some pot stickers do. We would have liked them a little crispier.

The first thing that might surprise you, upon walking into Surin, is the size of the restaurant. Located within a strip mall, the restaurant is neatly tucked into the end and encompasses three rooms of seating for diners.

WHAT SHE ATE:

Khoa Man Gai - $10

Marinated boneless chicken breast with a crispy tempura, and aromatic Thai style rice cooked in chicken broth and a spicy ginger garlic dipping sauce. Accompanied with dressed fresh greens.

I sampled the Khoa Man Gai, which sounded delicious on the menu, but fell slightly short of my expectations. While there were no surprises with my dish, my tempura chicken was completely dry while my rice was steamed and fresh. What made the dining experience pleasant was our wonderful waiter, Poshan. His conversation was lively and he made an active effort to wait on us.

Mr. Clearwater

I’ve been eating at Surin of Thailand for about 10 years now. For me, it’s always been in the running for one of the best restaurants in Huntsville. Surin has a great atmosphere filled with lots of cultural decorations. Our waiter was extremely prompt and was great interacting with all of us. I didn’t get your name, but great job, my man. I would rate the atmosphere as being a 5/5.

WHAT HE ATE:

Thai BBQ Chicken - $10.00

Half chicken marinated overnight in Surin's BBQ sauce and slow roasted to perfection then grilled Thai style; served with shrimp fried rice.

Today I ordered the Thai BBQ chicken for myself and pot stickers as an appetizer for the table. The pot stickers were the perfect thing to get the meal going. Before receiving the main course, everyone got a cup of coconut and mushroom soup, which I also really enjoyed. I don’t know exactly what they do to it to marinate and prepare the Thai BBQ chicken, but its the best chicken in town, IMHO. The half chicken is cooked to perfection, is fall-off-the-bone, and has a sweet BBQ flavor that is unlike anything you’ll find at your usual southern BBQ spot. Great meal at a very reasonable price.

Wise Pat

Surin is a fairly large restaurant that should get you served pretty quickly for lunch or dinner. We went with a party of 8, were seated within minutes, and our food served very quickly as well.

WHAT HE ATE:

Spicy Beef Salad - $9.50

Grilled marinated strips of lean beef, tomato, onion, & cucumber in spicy Surin sauce with romaine lettuce.

I had the Spicy Beef Salad and it lived up to its name! Great spice and flavor! My mom would definitely say it’s too spicy but she can feel the heat from black pepper and we all know black pepper isn’t spicy. I’ll be eating that dish again!

The Apprentice

You only ever hear about love at first sight in movies and fairy tales. But what if I told you it was possible to experience this feeling in real life. Impossible? Nahhhh, not for Surin of Thailand. I feel like this restaurant is the Bat Cave of Huntsville dining. Situated in a strip mall off of Whitesburg Road it doesn’t really catch the eye as you pass. I didn’t even know it existed until the day of this review. Anyways, while the outside doesn’t look like anything special, the inside is really large with lots of seating. Service was amazing and we were seated and taken care of very quickly.

WHAT HE ATE:

Thai Noodle Plate - $9.00

Thai thin rice noodles, pan fried with shrimp & chicken, scallions, sprouts, and egg; garnished with peanuts and bean sprouts.

I branched out and got something I had never really tried before, a Thai noodle plate with shrimp and chicken. The flavor combinations worked really well together and everything was cooked perfectly. Personally, I would have liked more of the peanut garnish because I like the crunch it adds. Also, I appreciate that the garnishes, peanuts, carrots, and onions, were set to the side of the main dish so you could choose the amount you wanted. Great meal.

The Boss

I had been to Surin one time before and had a great experience that time, so I was eager to get back! We sat at the very front of the restaurant last time, so when the hostess led us back to the back of the restaurant, I was surprised at how big the dining room was. It is beautifully laid out, not crowded. Anywhere you sit, you feel like you have enough privacy and you can hear conversation at your table very well.

Our waiter, “Poshan,” was very friendly, helpful, and informative, quickly attending to every need we had. He was polite and talkative and we certainly enjoyed having him as our waiter!

WHAT SHE ATE:

Chicken Noodle Bowl - $9.00

Grilled marinated chicken breast, rice noodles, and ginger in a peanutty lemon curry sauce, with onions, bean sprouts, and crisp romaine lettuce.

The picture makes the dish look a little small, but it was really a very large bowl!

Honestly, I ordered the same thing I got last time I went to Surin since I liked it so much! I’m not crazy about lettuce being in a warm dish, so I removed that from the top, no problem. The chicken was accidentally left out of the dish, so we mentioned it to our waiter, and he immediately brought a small bowl full of chicken! (He was the best waiter we’ve had since we started going on our work lunches!) The flavor of the sauce and the texture of the noodles were perfect. The chicken was a tiny bit dry, but the flavor was perfect. I had enough food to satisfy me for lunch and save some for later (which always makes me feel like I’m getting more for my money)!

The Hipster

We received great service and had fun sharing stories around our table. The only negative I would say is that the hostess who seated us was not wearing typical hostess attire and seemed a little too casual for the setting of this restaurant. The service was prompt and the food was tasty. Surin’s website has an easily accessible menu and it looks up to date. The restaurant, while a little tight in places, is handicap accessible as well. Surin of Thailand should definitely be on your list of restaurants to visit.

WHAT SHE ATE:

Thai BBQ Chicken - $10.00

Half chicken marinated overnight in Surin's BBQ sauce and slow roasted to perfection then grilled Thai style; served with shrimp fried rice.

Today I had the lunch special of Thai BBQ Chicken, which came with fried rice with some shrimp on top. It was very delicious and I am looking forward to my leftovers. I wish there had been more of the sauce from the chicken on the fried rice, because it was so delicious. It did come with some sweet and sour sauce, but I was more of a fan of the sauce on the chicken, which had to have been the BBQ. The whole experience was great and I will definitely be going back.
